Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year Amid Economic Uncertainty

The United States monetary authority lowered borrowing costs on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.

Move Comes at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The decision to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Central Bank’s Task

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the central bank’s task. Gathering of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Fed typically analyzes BLS data to assess labor market conditions, including the number of employment gains added to the economy and the present unemployment rate. The last jobs report was released in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of positions added to the economy in August was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and unemployment rose to 4.3% – the highest since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in the start of last month, it suspended its publication when the closure began. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Reveals Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal price increase is 2%.
