An individual earned a substantial sum by predicting the removal of Venezuela's president shortly prior to it was made public, raising questions about the possibility of profiting from non-public details of the event.
Wagers on Polymarket, an online prediction market, that the leader would be no longer in control by the end of January increased in the time leading up to President Donald Trump declared on the weekend that Maduro had been seized.
A particular user, which registered on the site last month and placed four wagers, all on political events in Venezuela, profited a total of $nearly half a million from a initial bet of $32.5K.
Who placed the bet is a mystery. This unidentified trader had only a blockchain identifier for identification.
Trading information shows that participants estimated the likelihood of the president's removal at just under 7% in the late afternoon of Friday, January 2nd.
Yet the odds had jumped to eleven percent by shortly before midnight and skyrocketed in the first hours of January 3rd, pointing to a sudden change in market sentiment immediately prior to the social media post was made.
"That trade has all the characteristics of a trade based on inside information," said a financial reform advocate.
A small number of other individuals also profited tens of thousands of dollars from similar wagers.
Some lawmakers are starting to take note.
A bill put forward on the start of the week would prevent public officials from placing bets on forecasting platforms if they have "material nonpublic information" related to a wager.
Forecasting platforms have become increasingly popular in the United States, with traders able to wager on everything from elections to political events.
The industry encountered regulatory challenges under the previous administration. Yet it has found a more favorable environment during the Trump presidency.
Trading on insider information is a crime in the stock market, but there are less oversight in the forecasting space.
An official representative for a competing service said their site "strictly forbids trading on insider information of any form."
